Friends

6 Dec

people1“I have no friends left” Josie cried out loud.
“Not one person I can say is truly my friend. Friendships end when school ends”she continued.
And, after playing with her dog for far to long she trudged off to work.

“Hey Josie, how’s it goin today” said her neighbor Marney. “Thanks for the cookies you baked me. I ate them all. Got any more, ha,ha,ha..”

“That’s what ..”Josie hesitated. “Glad you enjoyed them. I’ll make some more, ha,ha..”
She’s a neighbor, not a friend thought Josie. There’s a big difference.

Josie continued on to work saying hello to various people along the way.
No friends here, she thought. Just acquaintances.

She even set a date to go to the dog park with one of her “acquaintances” although she wished he was her friend and not some guy she went to the dog park with once a week.

At work, everyone greeted her. They even stopped long enough to pass on the latest gossip and tell her what was going on in their lives.

Josie didn’t share how she was feeling so lonely without any friends. But she did like gossip. And she did like finding out about things that were going on in her friends, work acquaintances, lives.

At the end of the work day everyone was going out for supper to celebrate Bill’s Birthday.
Mary tagged along. She felt obligated to take part in work social events with her co-workers.

She sat with Dawn and Betty, the two people she most related to at her work.
Both had dogs. Both were single. And they chatted, and laughed. And even made plans to go shopping together.

“It’s nice to have someone to shop with” thought Josie. “It would be nicer to shop with friends than co-workers though.”

Back at home the doorbell rang.
It was Marney and she had some of her world famous ( world famous is a relative term which people often use for ok stuff I assume) vegetable soup (which was going to be chicken soup but I didn’t want to offend my only commentor so it’s vegetable) for Josie.

“Thanks” said Josie. “You didn’t have to. But I’m glad you did.”

But Marney just said “That’s what friends are for” and then, after chatting for a while, having several cups of tea, sharing the neighborhood gossip, and making plans to visit again the next day, she headed back home.

And while Josie prepared for bed she thought back on the days events.
“Things would have been so much better if I could only have a friend.” she thought.
“Perhaps tomorrow it will happen.”

So today’s question is:
1) Do you ever wonder why it’s so hard to find friends?
