Embrace Change
8 Feb
It’s somehow odd that when you finish a major renovation in your home that it seems to create more work.
After redoing the walls and ceilings of my house I now need new flooring, some kitchen renovations ,bathroom renovations, blah, blah, blah..
And will it end when those things are done? Not likely. Kitchen renovations lead to changes in my dining room. Dining room renovations require deck renovations. Deck renovations require…….
The point is that nothing is ever really complete.
I picture people in Heaven spending time changing curtains on their cool homes.
And people in Hell just renovating their shacks and never finishing anything.
Our sites are just the same for a lot of us.
Some people seem content with their site. They just make little changes here or there occasionally. They are in Heaven.
Other people are in site Hell. We don’t like our site design. Nothing seems to fit the way we want. Our posts are all over the place. We lack direction.
But whether we are in site Heaven or Hell we still need to change things on our sites. The internet will continue to evolve whether we want it to or not.
Most of us fight change whether vocally or just in a subconscious level. Things that worked in the past are what make us feel comfortable.
We repeat what isn’t working over and over again without getting results. Often we deny to ourselves that the reason is because we need to change. We even defend our lack of action to others.
A while ago I wrote a post titled Business is Ruining Online Writing ..
In it I said that business had taken over blogs to the point where the old style personal blogs had fallen by the wayside.
I stand by that statement. Business ruined personal blogs for the most part.
There are still personal blogs on the web but there are far less than in the past.
But, business hasn’t ruined writing or blogging.
The writing has evolved. There is far more information available than there was in the past. And there is an increased openness as a result.
The blogging medium evolved as business found ways to exploit it. And it will continue to evolve as new and different avenues of connecting with potential customers are developed.
My Space changed blogging. Facebook changed blogging. Twitter changed blogging. Google Wave or an offshoot will change blogging.
And as someone running a site we need to change with it. Wallowing in self pity or fighting change won’t lead us anywhere. We need to adapt to the changing environment or accept what we have now and be content with being left behind.
So, what do you think about change?

I agree. I like change. I’ve never bought a house because I have no interest in renovations or redecorating. I’ve never bought “window treatments” or matching sets of anything. I own the bare minimum of what I need. When I move in somewhere, I just put my furniture and stuff where it makes the most sense and when I get tired of everything I move to a new place. I like getting to know new neighbourhoods, new towns, new people, new jobs. I would have made a good gypsy, except I wouldn’t have stolen anyone’s baby or put hexes on people…okay, I might have done a hex or two, but definitely no baby stealing
I always wanted to be a travelling musician but there apparently isn’t much call for musicians who can’t play instruments..
And I would never consider stealing a baby. Not after having kids of my own.
I believe that suffering should be shared, ha,ha..
Kids wouldn’t be so bad if they just didn’t grow up.

Oh, wait, does that mean I don’t like change? Darn, really thought I did. Oh well.

I love change. At least, that’s what I say during job interviews. I guess mostly I’m not lying. It can be a bit unsettling sometimes, though. Not that that’s a bad thing. It’s nice to be stirred up sometimes, even if you’re not ready for it. Maybe because you’re not ready to. The status quo might be easier, but it sure can get boring.
So, yeah, yeah, I love change.

As long as your definite on maybe liking change that’s good.I guess.
I like some change. Especially the kind that doesn’t involve me changing..
Back in the day, people were all over the internet.
Now, not so much.
But it’s not all bad out there. People are just interacting differently.
It definitely is different than 10 years ago though!

It is just different. Not better. Not worse. Just different..
That’s not what you said yesterday.

Probably not what I will say tomorrow either, ha,ha..
My take is that change for change’s sake makes no sense whatsoever, but change for improvement, or because you have a plan for it, works okay. Not all change turns out to be good without knowing what you’re shooting for.

Not all change is good but things will always change whether we fight them or not.
I think we need to remain open to adapt to change..
I’m like Mitch, I figure if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
Having said that though I will occasionally change ads and stuff if I find some that are not pulling their weight. Not really design orientated but still part of the blog theme.

I agree with both you and Mitch. Change just for the sake of change isn’t always the best course of action.
Unfortunately change is inevitable and a lot of times we don’t make the decision..
As I have found out more than one occasion in my life. When there is no other way around it you have to embrace change or suffer the consequences.

Actually, that’s true, but it doesn’t mean we have to accept it. I drop a lot of things that change if I don’t like them. I can afford to do it, and I’ll do it in a heartbeat. I’ll even drop people who change for the worse, and I’m ready to move away from anyone whose values suddenly aren’t palatable to me.
Here’s the thing. You really don’t have to embrace change, but you have to be ready to move on if you don’t want to embrace it. Choice is a wonderful thing.

Sometimes you do have to embrace it Mitch. Over the years it’s been forced on my on more than one occasion and I had to change the way I did things or become less profitable.

Sire, I’ll tell you a quick story. You know I’m a consultant. Seems southern states want all consultants to take blood tests before they’ll hire them. I refuse; just not going to do it. Now, I’ve probably lost hundreds of thousands of dollars, but I don’t care. If you don’t stand for something you’ll fall for anything.
I will never abrogate my beliefs for anyone, changes or not. As I said, we all get to make our decisions, and mine will never be based on money, period.

With me it wasn’t about beliefs or anything Mitch. The company I’m contracted to has been taken over twice. Each time I’ve had to change or lose money.
I was forced to move to another depot which incurred more traveling costs. Again I was forced to change or suffer the consequences. Some didn’t and they’ve gone under. A couple couldn’t cope and they committed suicide.
Changes isn’t always good but when it happens you have to adapt to survive.

I wrote this post because I still haven’t gotten over the demise of the personal blog. It was my way of saying to myself that it was time to move on. Change.
I really am enjoying the discussion that’s taking place.
I’m also completely confused that Comment Luv is still listing this post on my comments since it is on page 2 of my posts..
Change, darnit…
We’re glad you’re enjoying it.
Here’s the thing, though. I don’t know that I’d necessarily say there’s a demise. What I’d say is that there has been a modification. Man, on any day I can go to Google Blogs, type in one word, and immediately find 50 personal blogs talking about almost anything you can think of. And way more than half of them are personal blogs instead of business blogs.
What did change was the “diary” blog, because people started to realize that anonymity wasn’t quite as anonymous as they’d always thought it was. It turned out that people really didn’t want others to find their blog unless they were going to get total agreement; that doesn’t always happen, but we do deserve courtesy during disagreement.
So yes, there was a change, but folks didn’t totally go away. Instead, others joined the fray and opened up the world of blogging to places no one was ever expecting.

Sire, I understand your position. I became a consultant when the organization that my hospital was affiliated with decided to move the operation to a city that was 30 minutes further than the hour plus I was already driving, and offered me a 25% pay cut. If I’d had kids I would have had to take it, but I didn’t, so I didn’t take it. Though I’ve had ups and down since, I wouldn’t change a thing.
